Cyclist suffers erection for seven weeks after bike injury

A man was left with an erection for seven weeks after he suffered a straddle injury on the crossbar of his mountain bike.

The 22-year-old suffered with the condition for five weeks before seeking help from doctors at the Tallaght Hospital in Dublin.

The cyclist had to have a blood vessel blocked in a non-invasive procedure that involved inserting gel foam and four platinum coils at an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein that supplied blood to the man's penis, reducing the flow.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, the man had been suffering with a condition known as priapism, when an erection occurs without sexual stimulation for a prolonged amount of time.

The man, who is a competitive biker, had fallen astride his bicycle handlebar, and suffered pain and swelling. According to The Sun, when he was examined by doctors later he "revealed no signs of injury, but penis was erect".

The man has reportedly now fully recovered from the condition.

Speaking to the Independent.ie, consultant Intervention radiologist at Tallaght Hospital, Dr Ronan Browne described the treatment as "a great result for him. We were very happy with the outcome. It was an anxious time for the patient as it would be for any young man."
