A man has died after being hit by a tram in front of horrified shoppers in Manchester city centre.

Police said the man, who has not been identified, was killed when he was struck near Debenhams in Market Place at around 6.15pm on Saturday.

Sky News reports how witnesses saw the man being dragged and trapped underneath the Metrolink tram as he crossed a junction.

According to the BBC, the tram network was temporarily closed and there were long delays after emergency services had left the scene.
