The emergency services went to the scene at Weymouth Harbour shortly after 2.30am on Friday morning.

An RNLI crew pulled the 18-year-old Weymouth man from the water but he later died in hospital, Dorset Police said.

"His next of kin are aware and the coroner has been notified," a force spokeswoman said.

"The death is not believed to be suspicious but officers are looking into the circumstances of how the man came to be in the water."

The incident unfolded in the inner harbour in the early hours of this morning.

The Weymouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched at 2.45am to a report from Portland Coastguard of a person in the water near Weymouth inner harbour marina.

"The lifeboat arrived on scene within two minutes of launching," an RNLI spokesman said.

"Dorset Police and the South West Ambulance personnel were already on scene, the casualty
could not be reached with the inshore lifeboat because of the location between the marina
pontoons and Westham Bridge.

"The lifeboat was positioned on the marina pontoon as close to the reported position of the casualty as possible.

"The casualty could not be seen by the crew so a member of the crew entered the water and swam the five metres to the casualty's last known position.

"The casualty was located beneath the surface and recovered from the water on to the pontoon and then to the lifeboat.

"The lifeboat, with the causality on board, made the short passage to the town slipway and was handed over to awaiting ambulance personnel.

"The lifeboat was released to return to station at 3.15am."
