Formula One fans have expressed their anger over a series of ski holiday photos posted online by racing driver Lewis Hamilton after Michael Schumacher's accident.

Hamilton, 28, was criticised on Twitter and Instagram for his "insensitive" timing.

The Formula One driver was pictured cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with his dogs.

Users blasted him for not wearing a helmet while skiing, although wearing head protection is not generally required when cross-country skiing.

Comments included: "He really should think a little and take these down before it harms his good name."

Another Instagram user wrote: "Very insensitive Lewis-while Schumacher is in a coma".

But many fans defended Lewis. One said: "I live where nordic sking and snowshoing is a way of life...I have never seen anybody, including myself, wearing a helmet. Ever. Quit over-reacting."

Another of his supporters said: "He's not going to postpone his winter training just because of Schumacher. His fans want to see what he's up to. Why would you wear a helmet for cross country? Even in the Olympics they wear just a hat!"

Lewis Hamilton enjoyed a family ski break for Christmas. After Michael Schumacher's accident, he tweeted: "Mine & my family's prayers & thoughts are with Michael & his family. I wish him a quick recovery. God Bless him. The Hamiltons."

Schumacher is currently fighting for his life after falling and hitting his head on a rock in the French ski resort of Meribel on Sunday.
