With the festivities and fun of Christmas out of the way, winter can really start to hit home for the Brits. What better way to get out of the post-Xmas slump than booking a summer holiday to look forward to?

For those looking for a change from the usual European beach holidays or Florida theme parks, we look at a few of the up-and-coming destinations for 2014.

Macedonia
Following in the footsteps of now popular destinations such as Croatia and Bulgaria, Macedonia looks like attracting more and more tourists this year. A government-funded makeover for capital Skopje aims to make the city more tourist-friendly, and visitors will find excellent wine bars, bistros, and a top class club scene. For a quieter time, Berovo is a more established destination. Ebookers are currently offering seven nights at the four-star Karpos Hotel in Skopje, including flights, for £698 per person, or try the Best Western Hotel Turist, right in the centre of the city, for £589.

The Seychelles
A stunning collection of 115 islands nestling in the azure blue of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles is a paradise destination. Go the whole hog with a private eco-villa, or opt for one of the more affordable B&Bs, Creole guesthouses or self-catering apartments. Try a five-star Eden Island apartment on Mahe in May with Expedia for just £867 per person.

Costa de la Luz, Spain
While hordes of tourists will be making their way to the Costa del Sol this summer, take just a short trip along the coast to Spain's Atlantic coast and you'll find miles of stunning sandy beaches, windsurfing, white villages, and the beautiful towns of Jerez and Cadiz. Seville is not far away either, while the hill-top town of Arcos de la Frontera is well worth a visit. A beachfront hotel in Isla Canela, the Melia Atlantico, is just £433 per person for seven nights when you book with Thomson.

Sweden
Scandinavia might not always be your first choice when it comes to getting away, but Sweden has plenty to offer, particularly if city breaks are your thing. Stockholm has a deserved reputation for fine food, and both the capital and Malmo offer plenty in the way of pop culture and nightlife. Furthermore, Umea, in the north of the country, is 2014's European Capital of Culture so there will plenty to attract tourists this year. Book with Opodo and seven-night stay at the four-star Freys hotel in Stockholm city centre for £395 per person in July.

Malawi
A safari is many people's idea of a dream holiday, and Malawi is likely to become one of world's best wildlife destinations. The Majete Wildlife Reserve recently gained Big Five status, and with fewer tourists than some of the more well-known parks, you can enjoy Africa's amazing animal life without the crowds. And away from the plains, Lake Malawi offers crystal-clear waters perfect for a spot of snorkelling. An African safari is never likely to be the cheapest holiday on your list, but Exodus can offer a stunning deal with 16 days exploring the best of Malawi for £2,849 in September, including flights.
