Getting married is the secret to a happy and successful life, a new survey suggests. In a 'Happiness Poll' of 2,000 adults, conducted by GE, those who were married rather than simply in a relationship were found to be happier and more content with their life's successes.

Though 52 per cent of the respondents said they were either happy or very happy with their level of success, for those that got hitched the figure rose to 60 per cent.

And with a long and happy marriage to look back on, personal success was even more satisfying the older they got.

But the poll didn't measure life success simply by bank balance - the survey suggests work-life balance is the most important element, with the happiest folk being those who make time to spend with friends and family.

That balance, it seems, is considerably easier to achieve as you get older, with three-quarters of over 55s saying they had it right, compared with just over 50 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds.
Mark Elborne, UK chief executive at GE, told the Daily Express: "Success is not just about fame and fortune, it is about achieving what you set out to achieve.

"Having family, security, skills that make you stand out, or a good network of friends, family and workmates are seen by individuals as the measure of personal success.

"It is interesting to note the importance of balance to ensure people feel happy and successful in life."
