Piranhas attack more than 60 swimmers on Christmas Day
More than 60 people were attacked by piranhas in an Argentine river as they enjoyed a Christmas Day swim.
Bathers, including children, were bitten by the flesh-eating fish and suffered bites on their feet and hands in the Parana River.
Local media reports that one seven-year-old child had part of his finger amputated after the attack near Rosaria, around 300km north of Buenos Aires.
The Daily Mail reports that people were cooling off at the beach as temperatures reached 37C.
Biologists believe the heat provoked the attack, Pravda reports.
The beach was closed after the incident.
There are two well-known piranha species found in the Parana River - the Serrasalmus spilopleura and Serrasalmus marginatus.
