Train hits lorry tyre deliberately placed on railway track

A High-Speed Train suffered damage after striking a tyre believed to have been deliberately placed on railway tracks in Cornwall.

British Transport Police is appealing for witnesses and information after the train travelling towards Penzance struck the large tyre on the tracks between Menheniot and Liskeard at about 1.20pm on Sunday.

DC Dave Bailey, investigating officer, said: "The driver of First Great Western's 0857hrs London Paddington to Penzance service reported striking the lorry tyre which was on the line. He brought the train to a halt and, although the train suffered some damage, he was able to continue after a delay of around 30 minutes.

"Thankfully no-one was injured, but this could have resulted in a much more serious incident. Placing objects on the railway line is an extremely dangerous act and could result in serious consequences.

"It is only through good fortune that no-one was harmed and it is vital that we trace whoever is responsible for this foolish act."
