A 53-year-old man whose body was found on the beach at Portobello Promenade in Edinburgh died in a "tragic accident", police say.

Mark Fraser, from Joppa, Edinburgh, was believed to have walked home along Esplanade Terrace after a Christmas night out and fell down steep concrete steps leading to Portobello Beach, the BBC reports.

His body was found the next morning.

According to The Scotsman, a police forensic team carried out an examination of the area and Police Scotland says there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Fraser's death.

An elderly resident, who lives near the beach, told The Scotsman: "The body was lying on the third step from the bottom next to the beach. I saw three paramedics and they seemed to be pumping the man's chest, as if they were trying to restart his heart, but that obviously didn't work."
