Network Rail warns of travel disruption as 'very strong winds' hit UK tomorrow

Britons planning to travel by rail to spend Christmas with their families have been warned that trains may be cancelled or delayed on Monday due to strong winds and heavy rain across England, Wales and Scotland.

A Network Rail statement read: "This may mean that some trains are delayed or cancelled, and some train operators may run an amended timetable."

According to ITV News, train companies that could be affected by the weather include Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Coast, East Midlands Trains, First Capital Connect, Gatwick Express, Heathrow Express, London Overground, Merseyrail, ScotRail, South West Trains and Virgin Trains.

Sky News reports that 60mph winds are expected nearly everywhere in the afternoon and could reach 80mph.

Motorists could also be hit as RAC has predicted that 13 million people will take to the roads between 24 and 26 December.

Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: "Heavy rain is also expected to spread eastwards to most of the UK during the afternoon and overnight. So it will be a very wet and very windy day for all areas."
