The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are reportedly planning to break royal rules by travelling together with Prince George for their tour of Australia and New Zealand next year.

According to The Mail on Sunday, the couple plan to fly with baby George, who will be nine months old when they travel in April, breaking royal protocol about direct heirs to the throne flying together.

A spokesman told the newspaper they will make a final decision "closer to the time" but one aide told The Mail on Sunday: "It's a long way to fly, and there's a cost implication if they travel separately.

"There's no suggestion of them taking separate flights."

International Business Times reports that this will be Kate's first official visit Down Under, while Prince William has travelled to Australia and New Zealand a number of times.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told AAP that the family are visiting Australia because of the royal connections to the country.

"It's mirroring what happened before and tradition is a very important aspect of monarchy. It's a conscious link and people will respond. It is going to be historic."
