Between the freezing outdoor temperatures and the toasty, centrally-heated indoors, winter plays havoc with our hair. Invest a little time and TLC this winter, and keep your locks luscious.

Swap your shampoo
Central heating and cold weather can suck the moisture out of your hair, so an altogether different breed of shampoo is needed to stop thirsty hair from drying out.

Ojon's Dry Recovery Hydrating Shampoo (£18) boasts a blend of natural oils to smooth and soften hair, and helps to prevent brittle split ends. For a cheaper alternative, head to Waitrose and pick up a bottle of Argan+ Deep Repair Shampoo, which prevents breakage, detangles and strengthens, all for just £5.99. A conditioner is also available.

Mask it
Adding a hair mask to your weekly haircare regime will help to lock in the moisture and repair the inevitable damage.

Tigi's Reparative Nocturnal Therapy (£26.95) does all the hard work while you sleep. Simply apply to dry hair before bed, and wash out the next morning for a super shiny, detangled do. Mark Hill's MiracOILicious 2 Minute Intensive Treatment (£7.99) is a similarly quick and easy treat for your hair, moisturising with plant extracts, proteins and argan oil.

Meanwhile L'Oreal's Mythic Oil Masque (£14.65) leaves your hair feeling shiny, bouncy and nourished without added weight, and has a to-die-for scent to boot.

Oil up
Hair oils and serums are becoming increasingly popular, and they're a fabulously quick and easy way to condition flagging locks.

Boots' Argan Oil Hair Treatment is a bargain at £12.99, and comes enriched with natural antioxidant Vitamin E, and TRESemme's Oil Elixir for Colour Treated Hair costs just £9.99, and can be added to either wet or dry hair to moisturise and keep your colour intact.

Fight the frizz
Going from warm and toasty to fresh and chilly, not to mention the all-important winter hat, can cause fine hair to turn frizzy mess.

Try Joico's Smooth Cure Shampoo (£12.95) to start the fight against frizz in the shower. It has the added benefit of being sulfate free, so it won't dry your hair out during the winter months. Alternatively, keep control of flyaway hair without having to hit the shower, with Ojon's Rare Blend Tamer (£20), a non-greasy comb-through product that comes with its own handy wand to keep your locks in place.

Protect yourself
It's not just the heating that affects our hair when it's cold outside. In winter we all tend to blow dry and heat style to within an inch of our hair's life, so a little extra protection is essential.

Aveda's Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair (£20.50) is an easy-to-apply, leave-in treatment that allows you to style to your heart's content, but for those on a budget, VO5's Heat Protection Styling Spray does a similar job. Spray onto towel-dried hair and blow dry or style as per usual, and you'll end up with a glossy, frizz-free mane without any sign of residue.
