A man was trapped on an empty United Airlines plane at Houston Airport after everyone had left.

Tom Wagner fell asleep on the flight from Louisiana and woke to the pitch black cabin, ABC reports.

"I was like, what's going on?" he told KTRK-TV. "I thought maybe it was a layover, still on the same plane."

He said cabin crew had left without noticing him sleeping and the doors were locked.

"I called my girlfriend, and she thought I was crazy. I said, 'Debbie I'm locked on the plane.' I said, 'I'm telling you the truth; you better go somewhere and get me off this plane.'"

According to Yahoo!, Wagner's girlfriend called the airline and crew was sent to the plane to free him.

Wagner was given a toiletries package and a free night in a motel.

ExpressJet issued a statement that read: "An ExpressJet passenger remained on board flight 4245, operating as United Express from Lafayette, La. to Houston on Friday, Dec. 6, after all passengers had deplaned. ExpressJet is investigating to determine how this occurred. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this caused for the passenger."
