Teenage bodyboarder killed by shark off New South Wales

A teenager was attacked by a shark while surfing with friends at Campbell Beach in northern New South Wales, Australia.

Zach Young, 18, was bitten on the leg and is believed to have suffered a heart attack as a result of his injuries.

Young was about 100 metres offshore when he was bitten by the shark, a police statement read.

An Ambulance Service spokeswoman told Stuff.co.nz: "He suffered a traumatic cardiac arrest as a result of his injuries."

His friends pulled him from the water and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

According to News.com.au, Young was sitting on his board when he was bitten on both legs.

All beaches in the area were closed for 24 hours.

Chief lifeguard for Coffs Harbour City Council said that shark attacks in the area were rare and there have only been two recorded attacks ever.
