It looks as if Mercedes is after a slice of Porsche's powerful SUV pie as it revealed the Cayenne-baiting GLA 45 AMG concept at the LA auto show earlier this week.
The brawny concept car is a sneak peak into how a compact, high-performance Mercedes SUV may look in the not-so distant future.

Powered by an AMG-fettled 2-litre turbocharged engine, the GLA 45 is set to pack the performance credentials to match its steroid-gobbling appearance.

Acceleration figures are said to be under the five-second mark for the 0-62mph sprint and a top speed will be restricted to 155mph, although certain performance packs could see that figure rise to the 180mph mark.

A combination of the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and the AMG-derived 7-speed sports transmission creates a vehicle that is not only blisteringly quick on the Tarmac but one that is also accomplished on rougher terrain.

Unique styling touches include new AMG forged alloy wheels that are finished in a foreboding matte black, a large front splitter with gaping air intakes and low side sills that manage to almost graze the ground despite the jacked-up ride height.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG said: "With the Concept GLA 45 AMG, we are setting a stake firmly in the ground of the strongly growing market segment of compact SUVs. Our customers – a young target group who set great store by styling, dynamism and independence – can now start looking forward to a dynamic high-performance car.

"The most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system add up to make the Concept GLA 45 AMG a unique proposition," he added.
