A British tourist is lucky to be alive after falling from a third-storey hotel balcony in Thailand after reportedly having her drinks spiked.

Romany Mitchell, 21, fell 30ft after returning to her hotel following a night out in Phuket last Tuesday.

Friends claim she had her drinks spiked in a local bar before the accident occurred.

According to the Metro, a staff member at the hotel said: "It was her first night at the hotel and she had been out with friends but came back in a taxi alone. She was upset and crying."

Ms Mitchell, who is on a gap year after graduating from Edinburgh Napier university, has spent over a week at the Bangkok Phuket Hospital in Phuket.

According to the Daily Mail, the hotel staff member added: "Her foot was injured and she had other injuries but she was very lucky, it could have been very much worse."

It is thought she will be flown home later this week.

The Foreign Office yesterday renewed warnings to young British travellers about the dangers of hotel balcony falls.

According to the Mirror, a spokesman said: "Our message to everyone is to behave responsibly when they are staying somewhere that has a balcony. While not always the case, alcohol often plays a part."
