Pilot and passenger swim to safety after plane crash lands in Lough Erne

Two men escaped death on Lough Erne in Northern Ireland when their light aircraft crash landed on the water.

The pilot was praised after making the decision to land in the water and not on ground where chances of survival are lower.

The Irish Independent reports that the engines of the Cessna began to fail due to low oil pressure.

The pilot made the complex landing before the pair swam to the shore at Derryvore.

According to the BBC, Belfast Coastguard said lifeboats and helicopter were deployed but they did not know where the aircraft would land.

A spokeswoman said: "We then received a 999 call from a member of the public who had seen it land and who also saw two persons on board swim safely to shore."

The pair were treated for shock but were not injured.

The aircraft is now submerged in the water and an air accident investigation will take place.
