Video: Insane Ford GT hits 278mph in a mile
The Ford GT was one of the most exciting moments in recent motoring history: a mainstream manufacturer reliving its past glories in fantastically self-indulgent style by re-creating an supercar icon and giving it teeth enough to mix it with some of the greatest performance cars around. But it seems a number of tuning firms have found that you can make the best blue oval even better.
And looking at the footage of this bonkers Ford GT, you can't help but admire their efforts!
Producing somewhere in the region of a staggering 2,000bhp from its heavily modified engine, this car set a new top speed record of over 278mph at the Texas Mile speed event in America last weekend.
The Texas Mile competition has been running since 2003, and is held on a mile-and-a-half long airport runway near the town of Beeville.
It offers all comers the chance to show off the power and performance of their cars by giving them a mile to set the fastest top speed record they can.
The GT, owned by Mark Heidaker, managed to hit a maximum of 278.2mph at the latest event, smashing the previous record of 267.7mph.
That record had in fact been set by the same car, albeit in a previous state of tune, which had been carried out by renowned American tuning company Hennessey.
Since then, though, the GT has been subject to an even more extreme round of modifications at another tuner, M2K Motorsports, giving it an extra edge.
