Prince Harry breaks toe just before trek to South Pole

Prince Harry has broken a toe following a minor accident but will still take part in a gruelling charity trek to the South Pole, Kensington Palace has said.

The Press Association reports that Harry is not thought to be in any great pain but is likely to be taking things easy while the fracture heals.

This winter the prince will race with a team of injured British servicemen and women against United States and Commonwealth groups to the South Pole in an expedition organised by the charity Walking With The Wounded.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "He's fractured his toe but the South Pole trip is very much on."

It is not known when the royal suffered the break or which foot is injured.

Harry will race with the British team while Hollywood actor Alexander Skarsgard, star of the hit HBO series True Blood, will head the US team and English actor Dominic West, from the popular series The Wire, will race alongside the Commonwealth team.

The three teams will represent charities from the UK, US and Commonwealth and will race just over 200 miles across the Antarctic plateau during November and December.

The prince, who took part in the Walking With The Wounded trek to the North Pole in 2011 for five days, is patron of the Antarctica expedition.

Last month the royal spent the night in a giant freezer to simulate the gruelling conditions he will face when he treks to the South Pole.
