St Jude's Day storm: Passenger train hits tree in Devon

A CrossCountry passenger train has hit a fallen tree in Devon during the St Jude's Day Storm.

The train had no passengers on board and hit the tree near Ivybridge. The driver was not injured.

Richard Gibson, from CrossCountry, told the BBC: "The train hit a tree, or part of a tree, which was across the line.

"The train was empty - it was going to form part of the 07:02 Paignton to Manchester service."

This is the West Country reports that high winds and heavy rain hit Devon between midnight and 7am leading to 20 road closures.

An AA spokesman warned: "There's likely to be tree and other debris on the roads as well potential flooding, so it's very important to keep your speed down and drive with great care, particularly on country roads early on Monday morning when it's still dark."
