A lion was left spitting feathers, literally, when a pigeon made a very lucky getaway after flying into its enclosure.

The unsuspecting pigeon flew straight into the animal's cage at Adelaide Zoo, Australia, and only escaped becoming 'lion lunch' by the skin of its teeth.

The lion immediately pounced on the pigeon, but was left going hungry after the great escape, which was caught on camera by photographer David Gartland, from Aldinga, who was at the zoo with his family, reports the Daily Mail.

Mr Gartland said the whole thing took around a mere 20 seconds, and told news.com.au: "It's always about being at the right place at the right time.

"I didn't have a chance to do any fancy settings which was good because that blurred the bird."

The pigeon managed to escape the lion's clutches as the big cat opened its mouth to get a better grip.

"He (the lion) was left just covered with feathers on his face," added David.
