A 23-year-old crew member has died of "natural causes" on a Southampton-based Cunard cruise ship currently on a luxury Mediterranean trip.

The man, who has not been named, was a man from the Philippines working as a deckhand on the Queen Victoria, reports the Daily Echo.

A Cunard spokesman told the Daily Echo: "We can confirm the very sad news that one of our crew members on Queen Victoria died last night. We are providing support to his family back home and also to his friends and crewmates on board.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them at this time."

According Cruise Law News, the ship, which set sail from Southampton on 30 September, is on its way to Palma, Majorca.

It has already taken in in Lisbon, Malta, Kusadasi, Istanbul and Odessa as part of its Black Sea and Turkish Splendours cruise.

It will return to Southampton on 24 October after visiting Palma, Majorca, and Vigo in Spain.
