Plane door falls off mid-air and lands on motel roof

A door that fell off a small plane after it took off from Monterey Regional Airport in California on Thursday landed on a motel roof below.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident and, in fact, the front desk manager at the El Castell Motel says no one even heard the 34-kilogram door crash into the tile roof - as the room below it was unoccupied, reports Fox News.

The pilot of the small twin-turboprop plane reportedly "heard a pop" but only realised the door was missing after he'd landed, reports ninemsn.com.au.

It wasn't found until Friday morning when a contractor working outside the motel noticed it.

According to the Inquirer, the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate to see how the door came to fall off.
