Snorkeller killed by shark at South Africa's world-famous surf resort
A snorkeller has died after being attacked by a great white shark at world-famous surf resort Jeffreys Bay in South Africa on Friday.
According to the Herald Sun, the remains of the man's body were recovered from the water at the Eastern Cape resort.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said a volunteer rescue crew was dispatched at 11:30am local time.
"On arrival on-scene remains of a body, believed to be those of an adult male, have been recovered from the water and handed into the care of the police and the forensic pathology services," it said.
Sky News reports that a man in a kayak saw the victim lying face-down in the water and used his paddle to fend off the shark.
Witnesses first thought there were two sharks involved because of its length but it was later reported that a single shark more than four metres long killed the snorkeller.
There were four shark attacks in South Africa last year, three of them fatal.
