Alpina creates the world's fastest production diesel car

The humble diesel engine may well be known for its masses of pulling power and frugality on long-haul journeys but it is very rarely mentioned in the same breath as performance.
Bespoke luxury car manufacturer Alpina has decided to spice up the diesel saloon and estate car by selecting models from the current BMW 3-series range and injecting them with some serious turbocharged muscle.

The Alpina D3 Bi-turbo estate and saloon boasts a remarkable 348bhp and a massive 700Nm torque. The result is a machine that will catapult its occupants from zero to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds and on to 173 mph, yet has combined cycle fuel economy of 53.2 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 139 g/km.

UK customers will be able to get their hands on the D3 Bi-Turbo saloon for £46,950 and Touring estate version for £49,950 with a long list of standard equipment that includes an eight-speed automatic gearbox, Adaptive M Sport Suspension, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable heated sports seats, climate control and Bi-Xenon headlights.

External aerodynamic enhancements, a four outlet exhaust system and striking 19-inch Alpina alloy wheels will also be thrown into the deal as well as a plaque displayed on the centre console that marks the car's unique build number.

Matthew Stripling, Sales Manager at ALPINA GB, says: "The new six cylinder D3 has a wonderful bespoke feel that touches all the senses to make every journey a pleasure, whether commuting to work or powering through the mountains."
