British workers have the lowest levels of job satisfaction and professional fulfilment in Europe, according to a new study.

Research among 45,000 employees across Europe, including 5,200 in this country, found that only two-thirds of British workers were satisfied with their current employer, compared with up to 73% in other countries.

Recruiter Randstad, which produced the report, said poor levels of job satisfaction and professional fulfilment increased absenteeism, affecting profits.

Randstad urged firms to increase job variety and hire more women, younger and older employees, who it said have higher rates of professional fulfilment.

Chief executive Mark Bull said: "We are issuing a rallying call to employers to join us in action to address the state of fulfilment at work in the UK."
