Dario Franchitti crash caught on cameraphone
The crash, which saw Franchitti's car lifted into the air and slam into the fence at over 100mph after it was nudged by another vehicle, injured 13 spectators.
Scottish-born Franchitti was himself airlifted to hospital, where he remains "awake and alert", despite suffering a fractured spine and broken ankle.
"He's talking," said team owner Chip Ganassi, who arrived at the crash scene on a scooter. "His ankle is a little sore, his back is a little sore. He is going to be OK."
The race was eventually won by Australian driver Will Power.
