Hiker falls 650ft to his death from Lake District mountain

A 24-year-old man was killed in a 656ft plunge down a mountainside in the Lake District on Friday.

The hiker, who has not been named, was with a companion when he fell from Striding Edge on Helvellyn after losing his footing, the BBC reports.

He was found unconscious in Nethermost Cove by his climbing partner but as there was no mobile phone signal, he had to continue his descent into Grisedale.

According to Sky News, he was given a lift to Patterdale by a local farmer and an RAF Sea King helicopter searched for the hiker.

His body was discovered more than four hours later.

Patterdale MRT leader Mike Blakey told the Daily Mail: "This is a tragic incident involving the loss of a young life.

"Our thoughts are with the young man's walking companion, friends and family at this difficult time."
