A cyclist who came within inches of being hit by a train at a level crossing after crossing the barrier has come forward.

The woman was filmed passing the closed barrier and ignoring the warning signs at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire, the BBC reports.

A video of the incident on 12 September was released by the British Transport Police and shows the cyclist slamming on her brakes as the train speeds past.

British Transport Police said it had cancelled its appeal and was speaking to the woman "on a voluntary basis."

A spokesman told the Press Association: "I'd like to thank the public and local community, as well as the media, for all their help and assistance in this investigation. I hope the shocking CCTV serves as a stark warning not to misuse level crossings."

Speaking to ITV News, Network Rail's Richard Schofield said: "This is one of the closest incidents of near miss we've seen. The person using the crossing not only didn't hear the train but ignored the warning lights and barriers, putting her life, the lives of passengers and the train driver in danger."
