Ford Fiesta remains UK's best-selling car

The Ford Fiesta remains the UK's most popular car, September sales figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show.
Ford managed to shift 20,629 examples of the long-standing supermini, in a month which saw a total of 403,136 cars sold – the greatest number since the pre-recession high in March 2008.

The figures show that the Fiesta has cemented its lead as the most purchased car of the year to date, with its bigger stable mate, the Focus, in second place.

The family-oriented Focus took third place in the September sales ranking, being outsold by the Vauxhall Corsa by just 169 units.

The change to the 63-plate was partly responsible for the boost in sales, which saw the Fiat 500 sneak into the top-ten list with 7,422 units sold.

However, its upswing in sales is unlikely to worry Peugeot and Volkswagen, whose rival 208 and Polo have sold in greater numbers over the course of the year.

BMW, too, benefitted from increased sales activity with a total of 18,393 units registered in September, across its 1 and 3 Series model lines.

"The September new car registrations figure was the highest monthly total since March 2008. With over 400,000 new cars registered for the first time in more than five years, the UK market is reflecting growing economic confidence," said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive.

"Robust private demand has played a major role in this growth with customers attracted by exciting, increasingly fuel-efficient new models that offer savings in the cost of ownership. This is the 19th consecutive month of steady growth and, with fleet and business demand still to reach pre-recession levels, we believe the performance to be sustainable. The latest 63-plate should deliver positive results into next year."
