Dixons Retail creates 3,000 jobs

Currys PC WorldPC World and Currys owner Dixons Retail is creating 3,000 temporary jobs in the run-up to Christmas, its busiest period.

It is recruiting for stores across the country as well as for back-office support roles at its distribution and delivery hub in Newark, Nottinghamshire, and its call centre in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Last year 300 of 3,000 staff taken on during the Christmas period stayed afterwards.
Bridget Hutchinson, head of resourcing, said: "As we are preparing for another record-breaking Christmas period, we are excited to be looking for new colleagues to join us to help deliver a great customer experience."

The announcement comes in the wake of seasonal recruitment drives from Amazon, which is looking for more than 15,000 workers to cover the pre-Christmas period, and Argos, which is hiring 10,000 people.

Sales at Dixons' UK and Ireland operations, which trade through more than 500 stores and have more than 20,000 employees, have risen following the collapse of competitors such as Comet.

The group is in the midst of selling its loss-making European online retailer PIXmania.
