An earthquake in Pakistan has created a new island in the Arabian Sea off the Gwadar coastline, NASA has confirmed.

The BBC reports that fishermen noticed the new body of land just half an hour after the quake on Tuesday.

It is one of the biggest islands created this way in decades and is about the size of a football field, rising approximately 20 metres above sea level.

According to ITV News, two days after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the south-west Baluchistan province, killing more than 500 people, a NASA earth-observing satellite flew over the area and confirmed that a new island had appeared.

NASA released images of the island taken after the earthquake.

It appears as a mixture of mud, solid rock and sand.
