John Pedersen made the decision to land the single-engine plane in Lake Shore Drive in downtown Chicago after developing mechanical problems.
Speaking to the Chicago Sun-Times, he said: "I thought the plane was going to break apart, so I just had to put it down."
Firefighters pushed the plane to a grassy area near the lakefront once the 51-year-old landed.
According to the Associated Press, Pedersen, who has been a pilot for five years, said two cars hit the plane's left wing after he landed but drove off.
Chicago police said no-one was injured.
