'Good Samaritan' punched and bitten for waking up fellow train passenger

A good Samaritan in Scotland has been assaulted on a train after waking up a sleeping passenger who had been left behind when his friends got off the train.

The attacker, described as a "youth", bit and punched his fellow passenger before forcing open the doors of the train at the next station (Dalreoch) and running off across the tracks.

He had been sleeping in the luggage rack, according to British Transport Police.

The injured man, 30, had simply tried to wake up the sleeping young man to let him know that his companions had left the train. But instead of being thanked, he was bitten and punched several times, said a police spokesman. The man was treated for minor injuries in hospital.

CCTV footage is now being studied to identify the youth.

Speaking to The Scotsman, Detective Constable John McPhilemy said: "I am aware that the train was busy at the time and I am anxious to trace anyone present who has information to contact BTP."

The Dumbartonshire train was travelling from Balloch to Airdrie at around 11pm last Saturday.
