Winter already? Bitter wind, rain and cold temps to hit Britain

As snow fell in the Scottish Highlands this weekend, temperatures across the UK were feeling more like winter than autumn.

Daytime temperatures across the country hovered at around 11C on Sunday, with The Great North Run hit by strong gusts of wind as stormy conditions rolled in across much of the UK.

As some 55,000 people set off on the half-marathon in Newcastle, winds in the area got up to 40mph.

And colder temperatures, strong winds and rain are set to last for the week as a cool Atlantic front moves in.

Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel, told Aol Travel: "This week, the UK will remain very cool and unsettled with the jet stream currently strong and well south and feeding a series of low pressure systems eastwards across the north Atlantic to the UK. The wettest days will be Tuesday and then Thursday."

There seems to be some good news, too, however. Leon added: "From the end of the week the pattern will change and the jet stream will take a more northerly track.

"Higher pressure will then build over the UK to bring a fine weekend, especially to the south. Temperatures back up to normal with lighter winds, reaching 17C to 19C on Saturday and 18C to 21C in England and Wales on Sunday.

"However, cool at night with the risk of morning fog, especially on Sunday. More cloudy in the far north of the UK and perhaps a little rain for a while in northern Scotland overnight on Saturday.

"The warmest areas on Sunday could well be eastern Scotland, sheltered by the Highlands in a warm south west flow. Inverness to Speyside and Aberdeen all have a good chance of reaching 20C to to 21C, perhaps even 22C to 23C."
