A homeless man in Boston found a lost backpack containing $41,000 (around £25,000) and proved himself a Good Samaritan by handing it in to police.

The man gave police his name and address of the homeless shelter where he lives.

According to the Boston Herald, the man flagged down officers at around 5.45pm on Saturday night near the South Bay Mall in Dorchester, and told them he found the black backpack in front of a TJ Maxx.

It contained $2,400 in cash and $39,500 in American Express Travellers Cheques, as well as a passport and other documents.

BPD News reports that at around 6.47pm, an employee from the Best Buy store at the mall contacted officers to say a customer had reported losing a backpack containing a "large sum of money".

The owner of the bag was identified by his Republic of China passport and his property was returned to him.

Here's hoping the homeless man gets some kind of reward for his honesty.
