UK braces itself for first storms of autumn this weekend

Britain is set to be battered storms this weekend, with severe gales and winds of up to 50mph expected in the north.

As the balmy summer becomes a distant memory, rain and plummeting temperatures are forecast throughout the weekend, with Scotland and north eastern England getting the worst of it.

The Met Office has already issued severe weather warnings, and says that parts of the north east could see up to 60mm of rain on Sunday.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, a Met Office spokesman said: "On Sunday, we could see the first storm of autumn. Everywhere will be cloudy, with windy weather spreading from the west.

While the south is likely to avoid the severe winds, low temperatures and showers will persist.

And speaking to the Daily Mail, a Met Office spokesman said the weather was going to be uncharacteristically cold for the time of year: "We are going to get some wild weather coming in."

The yellow weather warning means that drivers are being warned to be extra vigilant because things may have blown into the road in the high-speed winds.
