Video: Porsche blitzes Nurburgring lap record

Porsche has smashed the lap record for production cars at the fearsome Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany with its latest hybrid hypercar, the 918 Spyder.
Covering the 12.8-mile distance in a lightning-quick 6min 57sec, the 918 averaged 112mph around the undulating course in the hands of Porsche factory racing driver Marc Lieb.

The time places it 14 seconds ahead of the former record holder, the Gumpert Apollo Sport, which managed 7min 11sec back in 2009.

The result will no doubt please the Stuttgart manufacturer, which – currently locked in a battle with McLaren and Ferrari for the ultimate next-generation hypercar – has taken the laptime honours early.

Despite purists bemoaning the extra weight and complexity of the 918's hybrid drivetrain, Porsche claims the power boost it offers was necessary for the car to set such a quick time. Mated to a naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 motor, which on its own develops 599bhp, the two on-board electric motors increase this to a lofty 875bhp.

Porsche has released on-board footage of the record run in its entirety, which you can watch (with likely awe of the sheer nerve Lieb displays) below.
