Dog walker dies in Welsh tourist spot trying to rescue puppy

A man has died after falling down a cliff in South Wales while trying to rescue his pet puppy.

Rhys Clark, 27, was walking with his girlfriend Ania Galanska, 25, and their dog at Southerndown, near Bridgend, when their puppy fell.

The couple tried to reach the dog but both fell off the 150ft cliffs to the rocky beach below.

According to the BBC, Mr Clark was killed instantly in the fall and Galanska suffered multiple injuries. The puppy also died.

Sky News reports that South Wales Police said the fall was treated as a tragic accident and is being investigated for the coroner.

Speaking to This is South Wales, his mum Janet, 64, said: "One of the things Rhys always said he wanted to do was to rescue an abandoned puppy and give it a good home.

"He and Ania loved the little dog and took it for walks along the cliff-tops at weekends.

"My son would still be here if it wasn't for the dog but I can't look at it like that.

"I had the most wonderful son, I don't know what I'm going to do without him. I just hope he didn't suffer."

The couple were planning to marry and settle down in the Herefordshire countryside.

Southerndown is a popular spot for dog walkers and tourists. It is a famous film location for TV show Dr Who.

Mr Clark's funeral is expected to take place on Thursday.
