A freak bolt of lightning which struck an ancient chapel lighthouse in Devon during a storm has been caught on by a local resident.

St Nicholas Chapel in Ilfracombe, a Grade I listed building which dates back to 1321, has been used as a working lighthouse for hundreds of years.

Local resident Jason Twist managed to take this spectacular pic at the moment of impact.

"My house overlooks the harbour, so I was in the right place at the right time" he told BBC News.

Three of the dome's glass panels were smashed in the hit, and the electrics were blown out.

The chapel is a special place of interest in the area and is an iconic landmark.Repairs are now taking place.
