Audi A3 Cabriolet unveiled at Frankfurt motor show

This is the all-new Audi A3 Cabriolet, which is enjoying its first public airing at the Frankfurt motor show.
The fourth model in the new A3 line-up, the Cabriolet features a folding fabric roof that can be raised and lowered in just 18 seconds, and at speeds of up to 31mph.

According to Audi, the roof "barely affects luggage capacity" (287 litres) when folded away.

An "acoustic top" will also be offered as an option, reducing cabin noise with an additional sound-deadening layer, alongside head-level heating and a rear wind deflector.

Further highlights from the extensive options list will include in car wireless Internet and a high-end Bang & Olufsen stereo.

The A3 Cabriolet will initially be offered with two turbocharged petrol engines: a 138bhp 1.4-litre and a 1.8-litre developing 178bhp. Those who prefer diesel will only have the 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI unit to choose from.

These will be followed shortly after the car's launch by a 1.6-litre diesel engine and a 298bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol motor in the S3 cabriolet – the performance flagship of the range.

Audi is claiming that the new range of engines is around 12 per cent more fuel efficient, thanks to the addition of cylinder-on-demand technology and the economy benefits of its optionally available twin-clutch S Tronic gearboxes. A six-speed manual is available as standard.

Initial models will be offered in front-wheel-drive guise only, with Audi's signature Quattro four-wheel-drive system to be introduced shortly after the Cabriolet hits showrooms.

Order books for the new Audi A3 Cabriolet open in late October, with the first customer cars expected for delivery in March next year.
