Thrill-seekers get stuck on Alton Towers ride for two hours at 60ft

Thrill-seekers got more than they bargained for when they got stranded on a 60ft ride at Alton Towers - for two and a half hours.

Dozens of customers were trapped after the TH13TEEN ride broke down on Friday due to a "technical issue".

An onlooker told The Sun: "The people stuck up there looked terrified. They were just hanging 50ft to 60ft off the ground.

"The weather was awful. It was high winds and raining hard. They were all shaken when they finally made it off."

Staff ensured the stuck customers were as comfortable as possible, taking up waterproofs and hot drinks, and they were eventually led down the tracks while wearing safety harnesses.

TH13TEEN is a steel roller coaster that opened on 20 March 2010. It is the world's first vertical freefall drop roller coaster - on which the track and train freefall approximately five metres in darkness.

The ride replaced and is built on the former site of the Corkscrew, which resided at Alton Towers for 28 years between 1980 and 2008.

While the experience was no doubt unpleasant, there are worse, although extremely rare, accidents that can happen at theme parks.

Back in July, a woman died falling from a rollercoaster in Texas after her safety bar released.

The accident happened at the Six Flags Over Texas theme park.

According to The Guardian, the woman was riding the Texas Giant rollercoaster, billed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world.
