Freebie Friday: this week's discounts, deals and freebies

Freebie Friday

It's official: now that the schools are back, it's definitely the end of the summer. And while we enjoy a few last days of sun, we also have to deal with the consequences of the summer - from an empty bank account to over-snug waistbands.

If you're dealing with a financial hangover, we have a number of decent discounts and freebies to ease you into autumn, from free makeup and gym membership, to a knitting freebie for schools.

Free Touche Éclat foundation from YSL

YSL does pretty high-end makeup, so if you want to get a little luxury for free, you can go to any YSL counter in any department store and ask for your free 5ml sample of foundation. Normally 30ml costs £29 - so you're getting about £4.83 worth of foundation for nothing.

Free 3-day gym membership

If you're trying to get into shape after the excesses of the summer holiday, you can kick-start your efforts with a free three-day pass to your local Fitness First. Just fill in your details here and you will get a phone call to book you in. You will have to put up with a spot of hard-selling in order to get this freebie, but if you know you can tolerate it, why not?

75% off at Verbaudet

If you've never shopped at Verbaudet before, you can get an incredible £15 off a £20 shop - plus a free wooden abacus if you buy before Sunday 6 October. All you need to do is enter the code 4772 at the checkout. The downside is that you'll also need to fork out £3.99 for delivery. However, it's still better than half price with the bonus of a free gift.

Free burger or hot dog from Ed's Diner

If you sign up to Ed's Club on the Ed's Easy Diner website you'll get a voucher for a free burger, chicken burger, or hot dog. And if that's not enough, when your birthday rolls around you'll get a voucher for a free milkshake too.

Free knitting kit for schools

The users of HotUKDeals have spotted that you can get your hands on free knitting kit for your school from if you want to start a knitting club. Just email with details of the club and the number of members, and you'll get a guide to how to knit, a pattern to start you off, and some freebies and discount vouchers for the rest of the kit.

Freebie Friday: this week's discounts, deals and freebies

This takes time, but once you know the cost of a phone call, putting the dryer on, or a bag of potatoes, it enables you to judge far better how much you can afford to consume.

Once you know the base price, you are in a position to keep your eyes open for a better offer. If you see a discount you can judge for yourself whether it actually constitutes a bargain. For bigger things like utilities it enables you to do a proper price comparison and see if you can cut your bills.

Don't just assume that the premium range is better, try the every-day brand, or even the basic version and see if you spot the difference. Likewise, consider trading down your supermarket from one of the big players to local markets or discounters like Aldi.

If you plan what you buy to match what you actually cook and eat then not only will you be able to budget far more effectively, but you'll also waste much less and find your money goes further without you having to try.

If you can't think of a way to get your meat for less, consider a vegetarian day once a week. If you can't find petrol any cheaper, then work on making your driving as efficient as possible. The more you can think of clever alternatives the less you will have to make painful cuts to make ends meet.
