Salford couple's car plunges into canal

An anniversary boat trip on the Bridgewater canal in Manchester turned into a disaster for one family after their car plunged into the water.
Sharon and Duncan Hall had arrived at Salford Marina to embark on day on the water to celebrate Duncan's parent's 49th wedding anniversary.

However, when they parked at the side of the canal, they watched in horror as their Volkswagen Touran people carrier slid into the drink due to a faulty handbrake.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Duncan said: "It was like something from You've Been Framed – but it wasn't funny. The boat trip was a surprise for my mum and dad. I parked up, locked up and we were ready to get on board when I heard my wife shout 'the car!'.

"It was already halfway in the canal."

Thankfully, staff at the marina's boat-hire centre were able to tie a rope around the car's roof rack and secure the car to stop it sinking completely.

It has since been winched out of the canal by a crane sent by the couple's insurance company. The recovery firm has confirmed the handbrake was applied correctly and that a suspected fault was to blame for the accident.

The couple's day wasn't ruined entirely – they continued with their boat trip and there were no injuries as a result of the accident.

Duncan added: "I think it's beyond repair because of the water damage and because the crane had to smash the windows to hoist it out.

"But I'd like to thank Karen's Boat Hire. Without their quick thinking it would have been on the bottom of the canal."
