A cult leader known as "Black Jesus" who was accused of raping, murdering and eating young girls has been hacked to death by villagers in Papua New Guinea.

Stephen Tari, a convicted rapist, had been on the run since escaping prison in Madang in March, AFP reports.

"He is now dead and this could be the fate of the others who are also on the run from authorities and I am warning and strongly urging those escapees to surrender themselves to authorities," Madang police chief Sylvester Kalaut told the PNG Post-Courier.

According to the Independent, the 40-year-old was previously accused of raping, murdering and eating three girls in front of their traumatised mothers.

He was the leader of a 6,000-strong sect and is said to have regularly drank the blood of his "disciples".

After killing another woman, villagers finally snapped and surrounded him before hacking him to death.

Black magic, sorcery and cannibalism sometimes occur in Papua New Guinea and the government this year voted to revive the death penalty.
