Woman 'breaks both legs' after getting trapped under horse-drawn tram

A woman is being treated for 'serious leg injuries' after getting trapped under a four-tonne horse-drawn tram in Leeds.

The accident happened on Monday at the Middleton Railway Festival of Transport, where the vehicle was being unveiled after its restoration.

The woman who was injured was one of the grooms leading the two horses pulling the tram, when she got trapped under its wheels.

According to the Halifax Courier, firefighters from three local areas attended the scene.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that the woman became trapped after one of the animals bolted, and the firefighters had to push the vehicle along the tracks to release her before she was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

The paper adds that it is thought she broke both legs, but that her injuries are not life-threatening.

The restored horse-drawn tram was on its first outing for 112 years, and had been unveiled at the event after an eight-year restoration.

Built in 1898, according to the BBC, it is the last remaining horse tram in Leeds and is due to go to the National Tramway Museum at Crich in Derbyshire.
