Video: Huge sinkhole swallows 40ft trees in Louisiana

The moment a massive sinkhole in Louisiana swallowed several 40ft trees in just seconds has been caught on camera.

According to Sky News, the footage was posted on the Assumption Paris Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) blog and was shot by a parish official.

The sinkhole is around 28 acres wide, and is still growing, according to the OEP.

The Daily Mail reports that the sinkhole first opened up last August after locals noticed gas bubbling on the surface and the smell of diesel.

Officials are unsure as to what is causing it, but believe it could be related to a nearby salt cavern owned by the Texas Brine Company.

Authorities have said that residents are not in danger.
