German tourist who lost arm in Hawaii shark attack dies

The German woman who lost an arm after being attacked by a shark in Hawaii last week has died.

Jana Lutteropp was snorkelling about 50 yards off the Hawaiian island of Maui on 14 August when a shark attacked and bit off her right arm at around 4.40pm.

Her mother, Jutta Lutteropp, and sister, Julia Broeske, told CNN she was "a very beautiful, strong young woman who was always laughing, and we will forever remember her that way".

Her mother added: "Jana fought hard to stay alive. However, we are sad to say that she lost her fight today."

Jana had been on life support at the Maui Memorial Medical Centre. According to the Daily Telegraph, a statement from Jutta added: "We appreciate all the support from the Maui community, as well as the prayers and thoughts from around the world and in Germany. We especially want to thank the wonderful caregivers and everyone at Maui Memorial Medical Center."

At time of the attack, an American teacher, Rick Moore, 57, was hailed a hero after jumping into the water and swimming to her aid after he saw her "floating on her back with no arm" following the attack.

Just a few days later, a sixteen-year-old surfer, Jimmy "Ulu Boy" Napeahi, was also attacked by a shark in Hawaii.

According to Fox News, the Hawaii County Fire Department said the boy was bitten on both legs on Sunday 18 August while surfing southeast of Hilo, on Hawaii Island, the largest of the eight islands that make up the archipelago and often dubbed Big Island.
