British gran books holiday to Portugal - and ends up in Spain

Updated

A British grandmother who booked a seven-night holiday to to the Algarve was shocked when she realised she'd ended up in Spain, instead.

Everything was fine as June Burns, 66, boarded a flight to Faro with her friend Susan Jones.

But, after landing, Thomas Cook transferred them almost 100 miles across the border to the Costa de la Luz in Spain.

The pair only realised the mistake when they arrived at the Punta Umbria Beach Hotel, near Heuelva, in Spain.

According to the Daily Mail, June, from Greater Manchester, said: "I went up to the rep and said 'Where are we?' And she said 'Spain, is there a problem?' And I said, 'Yes, I should be in the Algarve'. She just said it would be difficult to move us because there might not be a free hotel and that we'd definitely enjoy it here."

According to the Express, she added: "If I ask a holiday company to book me a holiday in the Algarve I expect to end up in the right country.

"It's like booking a holiday to Scotland and ending up in England."

June and her friend had no choice but to stay at the hotel in Spain, which she said was fine, but was "in the middle of nowhere".

On June's return to Greater Manchester, she was offered £200 compensation by Thomas Cook.

But, reports the Manchester Evening News, June's still waiting for the £1,247 Portuguese holiday she paid for.

A spokeswoman for the holiday company told the Mirror: "We would like to apologise for any misunderstanding that may have occurred.

"We can confirm that we are speaking to her with a view to resolving this matter to her satisfaction."
