Incredible lightning strike hits skyscraper in Colorado

One lucky photographer managed to capture the moment an amazing lightning bolt lit up the night sky as it struck a skyscraper in Denver, Colorado.

The unbelievable shot is just one of many of the city's skyline taken by photographer Greg Thow. The 49-year-old has also captured equally stunning shots of arching rainbows and mushroom clouds - all from the comfort of his high-rise apartment balcony.

Back in May, the incredible moment a fierce lightning bolt crashed against the Grand Canyon, illuminating the steep canyon walls, was caught on video.

And, in June last year, a video captured the "terrifying" moment that lightning struck Newcastle's Tyne Bridge as storms battered parts of England.

Meanwhile, a picture of two brothers with their hair standing on end taken in 1975 shows what can happen just moments before lightning strikes.

Electrical charges in the atmosphere - responsible for lifting the hair - can be a warning sign that lightning is about to hit.
